Unfermented Soy Products and Breast Cancer
If you still believe soy products are healthy for you, please read this article by Dr. Mercola. It was referred to in his recent article (my post: Risks of New 3D Mammograms) and avoiding unfermented soy products was one of his cancer prevention tips.
You have probably seen these ingredients listed on many of the products found on grocery shelves today: yeast extract, soy protein isolate, soy lecithin, soybean oil, soy flour, among others. This soy, in its processed form, was created from the food industry’s need to do something with the surplus of byproducts from their ever-growing soybean oil industry. As stated in Dr. Mercola’s article, this “New Age Cinderella” is not the health food it has been claimed to be, and the risks of consuming unfermented soy products far outway any possible benefits. In fact, studies have linked processed soy to many negative health effects, such as thyroid disorders, immune system impairment, digestive distress and even cancer.
The article lists some of the reasons to avoid unfermented soy (found in soymilk, soy burgers, even tofu), including that 91% of the soy grown in the US is genetically modified, it is loaded with isoflavones which disrupt endocrine function, and soybeans are processed by acid washing in aluminum tanks which (as you probably guessed) can leach high levels of aluminum into the final product.
The healthy way to eat soy is by choosing FERMENTED soy, the form of soy that has been used by many Asian cultures for centuries. Read the rest of the article to understand the difference and which soy products are recommended.
